Frequently Asked Questions

1. If we aren’t positive how we will get to net zero, should we still sign up?

Yes! It will be a journey for all signers, and it’s ok to not know your exact path from the beginning. Making the commitment is a critical first step.

2. Are there any penalties for not fulfilling the commitment?

Net Zero F.A.S.T. is not legally binding. The integrity of the initiative depends on organizations pursuing their commitments to the best of their abilities, but we understand things don’t always go as planned and there will not be any penalties. Organizations that stop working toward their commitment may be removed from the list of signers.

3. We really want to do this and show leadership on climate, but we’re not sure if the decision-makers in our organization will be on board? Can you help us make the case?

We would love to present to the leadership at your organization and answer questions or concerns. Please contact us to set up a free exploratory meeting so we can be your advocate.

4. Who else is signed on?

We are currently recruiting our inaugural cohort of signers and will publish the list in summer 2020.

5. How will Net Zero F.A.S.T. make a difference?

Our goal is to catalyze both emissions reductions and actions that advance climate justice, leadership, and resilience. We hope that a critical mass of organizations of all sizes and stripes from across Southeast Michigan will inspire a deeper wave of leadership. We know we are part of a larger global movement and each of our transformational nodes matters. But regardless of what happens beyond SE MI, we hope that these action steps yield immediate benefits – in cost savings, employee morale and satisfaction, local air quality, and more vibrant buildings and community spaces.

6. Are there are other implementation resources you offer?

Absolutely. Please see the list of services and transparent, affordable pricing. We have extensive experience working with

7. Are there any grants to get started?

Not at this time, but we are seeking funds to help small businesses and non-profits with free energy consulting and matching project investments.

8. Do we have to address our emissions from solid waste or the life cycle emissions of the products we buy or sell?

The emissions you are responsible for are your direct consumption of energy (vehicle fuel (including commuting), natural gas, and electricity), and emissions associated with water treatment. Emissions beyond these categories are just as valuable to reduce, but not included because they are significantly harder to evaluate responsibility for and track.

9. Is this really open to any organization regardless of size?

Yes, you heard that right.

10. What happens if we sign on and then there is a change of leadership that doesn’t support the initiative?

We’ll support your efforts to engage future decision-makers and get their buy-in, which is all we can hope for. On the flip side, maybe new leadership will decide to double down on your climate leadership.

11. How feasible is it to get to net zero?  Are there examples of other organizations that have done it?

It will vary greatly by organization.

12. How much will fulfilling the commitment cost us?

It will vary, but many organizations will achieve net cost savings.

13. My organization is just starting to think about climate change, but I don’t think we’re ready to make a big commitment yet.  Do you have recommendations on how to get started and build toward Net Zero F.A.S.T. in the future?

Sure – it’s a process. We offer initial workshops with staff or constituents and can begin small with projects like benchmarking your energy usage.

14. What about carbon offsets?

We allow carbon offsets to meet the commitment. While we don’t dictate policy on offsets, we suggest that every partner should maximize on-site reductions.
